Detective Conan's latest film has hit the ground running. Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway earned 3.5 billion yen (about $21.9 million USD) during its opening weekend, selling over 2.3 million tickets and claiming the franchise's best box office debut ever.

The 29th Detective Conan film centers on Chihaya Hagiwara, a Kanagawa police officer who leads the local motorcycle division. Miyuki Sawashiro voices the character, taking over the role following the passing of original voice actress Atsuko Tanaka. The story also features police inspector Jugo Yokomizo, teenage detective Masumi Sera, and several other key characters from the franchise.

Director Takahiro Hasui (Detective Conan: The Black Iron Submarine) helmed the project, while Takahiro Ōkura (Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter) penned the screenplay. Composer Yūgo Kanno returned to provide the score, and singer Misia recorded the theme song "Last Dance With You."

The film's strong performance pushed the 2026 Doraemon movie from the top spot. Doraemon the Movie: New Nobita and the Castle of the Undersea Devil dropped to #2 after holding the #1 position for six consecutive weekends. The Doraemon film, a remake of a classic 1983 entry, has now earned 3.9 billion yen total across its seven-week run and sold approximately 3.11 million tickets.

Doraemon's new film marked the 45th traditional 2D anime film in the franchise and reunited several veterans behind the scenes. Director Tetsuo Yajima, known for the PokΓ©mon films, returned to direct after contributing to previous Doraemon projects, while screenwriter Isao Murayama adapted the script from the original material.

Meanwhile, Shingo Yamashita's Cosmic Princess Kaguya! held steady at #5 following its limited one-week theatrical run.

Both Detective Conan and Doraemon continue their tradition as Japan's biggest theatrical franchises, with consistent box office performance year after year.
