McDonald's Japan launched an unexpected crossover this week: a dating sim game starring legendary voice actor Masako Nozawa alongside characters from the Baki martial arts manga. The collaboration, called "A Tatsuta Nozawa Finding Love with Baki," arrived Friday as part of the chain's Spring Chicken Tatsuta burger campaign.

Nozawa, best known for voicing Goku across the entire Dragon Ball franchise, appears as a 16-bit version of herself rather than any existing Baki character. McDonald's described her character as a "sharp-witted athlete with a kind personality and the strongest voice"β€”a cheeky reference to her real-world credentials.

The promotional game positions Nozawa as the "strongest heroine" caught between two of Baki's toughest fighters: Baki Hanma (voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki) and Kaiō Retsu (Rikiya Koyama). A 35-second teaser video showcases the absurdist premise, complete with the series' signature martial arts aesthetic filtered through retro game aesthetics.

McDonald's Japan teased the collaboration Thursday with silhouettes and taglines playing on Baki's strength-obsessed tone: "Drawn by the Chicken Tatsuta, the strongest men are coming" and "Another strongest has appeared between the two." The playful messaging positions Nozawa herself as formidable as the manga's famous fighters.

This isn't McDonald's Japan's first dive into anime collaborations. The campaign follows the chain's recent Mobile Suit Gundam crossover, suggesting the company sees anime tie-ins as a major draw for its marketing efforts.

While the dating sim appears to be a limited promotional experience rather than a full game release, it captures the kind of irreverent humor that Japanese fast food marketing has become known for. For fans of both Dragon Ball and Baki, it's a bizarre bit of cross-franchise fun that probably won't go anywhere beyond this burger campaignβ€”but it's the kind of random moment that makes anime fandom interesting.
