The One Piece English dub is bringing back a familiar voice from the series' early days. Erica Schroeder, who originally voiced Monkey D. Luffy in the 4Kids Entertainment dub from 2004-2006, will return to the franchise as Joy Boy in Crunchyroll's next batch of dubbed episodes.

The new episodes featuring Schroeder's performance will debut on March 24. While Schroeder won't be reprising her role as Luffy—that honor currently belongs to Colleen Clinkenbeard—her casting as Joy Boy creates an interesting connection to One Piece's dubbing history.

For newer fans, Schroeder's original Luffy performance was part of the heavily edited 4Kids version that aired on Toonami and introduced many Western audiences to One Piece for the first time. Though the 4Kids dub was eventually replaced due to extensive content changes, it holds nostalgic value for fans who discovered the series through that version.

Joy Boy is a significant character in One Piece lore, connected to the ancient history of the world and the mysteries surrounding the Void Century. Without spoiling details for anime-only viewers, Joy Boy's story becomes increasingly important as the series progresses toward its final saga.

Crunchyroll has been steadily releasing new English dub episodes, allowing fans to experience the latest arcs in their preferred language. The addition of Schroeder represents both a nod to the series' English-speaking fanbase history and the ongoing evolution of One Piece's voice cast as new characters enter the story.
