Bandai Namco Entertainment has released a gameplay trailer for Echoes of Aincrad, an action RPG that brings Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online universe to life as an interactive adventure.

The game launches in Japan on July 9 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with PC via Steam following on July 10. Western players get access across all platforms on July 10.

Echoes of Aincrad sets players in the original story's titular virtual death game, where they'll explore the 100-floor dungeon as one of the 10,000 trapped players. You won't be going soloβ€”the game features encounters with familiar SAO characters including Kirito and Asuna, giving the world a lived-in feel beyond the main protagonist's perspective.

Bandai Namco is offering four editions to suit different levels of commitment. The Standard Edition is your baseline experience. The Deluxe Edition adds expansion DLC, starter items, and early access to "Death Game" modeβ€”a punishing permadeath experience normally locked behind beating the game once. The Ultimate Edition bundles everything from Deluxe and throws in a bonus app/anime called "Unanswered//butterfly," a digital soundtrack, artbook, and exclusive armor. If you want the full collector's package, the Aincrad Edition (Bandai Namco Store exclusive) includes all previous content plus physical merch: a beanie, wall scroll, patches, and stickers.

The permadeath mode is particularly interesting for SAO fans. It mirrors the franchise's core tensionβ€”the danger feels real because failure has consequences. It's a smart design choice that captures what made the original story compelling.

Sword Art Online has been a multimedia juggernaut since Kawahara started the web novel in 2001. Beyond the acclaimed anime series and films, the franchise has spawned novels, manga, and even a live-action adaptation in development. Echoes of Aincrad represents another avenue for fans to engage with Aincrad's world, offering a chance to write your own story in the death game rather than just following Kirito's journey.
