AKB48 Members to Perform Ceremonial Pitch at DeNA Baystars Game

Four AKB48 members will take the field as special guests during the Yokohama DeNA Baystars' upcoming baseball game against the Chunichi Dragons on April 8th at Yokohama Stadium.

The selected membersβ€”Chiba Eri, Tokunaga Reika, Sato Kiho, and Ito Momokaβ€”will participate in the "Beβ˜†come Mates GAME" event series running April 7th, 8th, and 10th. Chiba Eri will handle ceremonial pitch duties, marking what appears to be a revenge attempt at the traditional pre-game honor.

Baseball Meets J-Pop

This collaboration represents the ongoing relationship between Japanese baseball teams and idol groups, a common promotional strategy that brings together sports fans and J-Pop enthusiasts. The Yokohama DeNA Baystars, based in Kanagawa Prefecture, regularly host special theme games throughout their season.

For AKB48, appearing at professional baseball games provides valuable exposure to audiences beyond their typical fanbase. The group, known for their "idols you can meet" concept, continues to maintain visibility through various public appearances even as the idol industry has evolved.

The ceremonial first pitch has become a coveted honor in Japanese baseball culture, often reserved for celebrities, politicians, and other notable figures. Chiba Eri's participation suggests she may have previous experience with the tradition, given the "revenge" framing.

Fans attending the game can expect brief performances or interactions with the members beyond the ceremonial duties, as these collaborations typically include multiple touchpoints throughout the event.
