Music Writer Publishes Visual Kei Guide, Sets Tokyo Talk Event
Music writer Tōshōgun's new book covering 100 essential '90s Visual Kei albums gets a celebration event at Tokyo's Loft Plus One on April 18th.

Music writer Tōshōgun (冬将軍) has released a comprehensive guide to Visual Kei's golden era with his new book "90年代ヴィジュアル系ロック名盤100選" (90s Visual Kei Rock Masterpiece 100 Selection).
To celebrate the book's release, a special talk event titled "90年代ヴィジュアル系×名古屋系アイドル" (90s Visual Kei × Nagoya-kei Idols) will take place on April 18th at Tokyo's Loft Plus One. The event will feature representatives from MAD'S iNK and associated Nagoya-kei idols.
For those unfamiliar, Visual Kei emerged from Japan's underground rock scene in the 1980s and exploded in the '90s, characterized by elaborate costumes, theatrical makeup, and dramatic performances. Bands like X Japan, Malice Mizer, and Dir En Grey helped define the movement that continues to influence Japanese rock today.
Nagoya-kei represents a darker, more underground branch of Visual Kei that originated in Nagoya during the late '90s and early 2000s. The connection between these two scenes makes for an intriguing discussion topic.
Tōshōgun's book aims to capture the essential albums that shaped Visual Kei during its most influential decade. With 100 carefully selected releases, the guide serves as both a nostalgic look back for longtime fans and an educational resource for newer listeners interested in exploring the genre's roots.
