Arashi's Jun Matsumoto Joins Live-Action Chiruran Shinsengumi Series

J-pop superstar Jun Matsumoto, known worldwide as a member of the legendary idol group Arashi, has landed a major role in the upcoming live-action adaptation of Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem. The series is set to debut on March 26.

Matsumoto will portray Matsudaira Katamori, the historical figure who founded the famous Shinsengumi police force during Japan's turbulent Bakumatsu period in the 1860s. This casting brings significant star power to the adaptation, as Arashi remains one of Japan's most beloved boy bands even after their hiatus in 2020.

Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem is based on the popular manga series that puts a unique spin on the legendary Shinsengumi warriors. The original manga follows the adventures of these samurai police as they navigate political upheaval in late Edo period Japan. The series is known for its blend of historical drama and character-driven storytelling.

This isn't Matsumoto's first venture into acting – he's appeared in numerous Japanese dramas and films throughout his career. His casting as the Shinsengumi's founder suggests the live-action adaptation will focus heavily on the group's origins and leadership dynamics.

The Shinsengumi have been featured in countless anime, manga, and live-action productions over the years, making them one of Japan's most popular historical subjects. Fans can expect this new adaptation to bring fresh perspective to these iconic warriors when it premieres next month.
