Bandai Spirits is going big for Macross' 45th birthday. The toy maker just announced a new DX Chogokin SDF-1 Macross that transforms between fortress and "storm attacker" modes—and it's the biggest version of the iconic space fortress ever released as a collectible toy.

Measuring roughly 26 inches long in fortress mode and stretching over 28 inches tall in storm attacker configuration (including its stand), the new toy dwarfs its predecessor from the 1980s. Takatoku Toys' vintage transforming SDF-1 Macross was built to a 1/3,000 scale. Bandai Spirits' version is so much larger that it occupies over three times the cubic space of that original release—a pretty fitting tribute to a franchise that's defined mecha design for nearly five decades.

The toy packs some serious engineering. A promotional video showcases the full transformation sequence, working color-changing lights inside the fortress to represent the city within, and even a recreation of the Daedalus Attack, one of the series' most memorable combat maneuvers. Mechanical designer Kazutaka Miyatake—the mind behind the original SDF-1 design—appears in the video to discuss the new toy's development.

Bandai Spirits first teased this project at Tamashii Nations 2022, showing off an early prototype that already impressed collectors. The finalized version goes even further, refining both the transformation mechanics and the level of detail throughout.

The DX Chogokin SDF-1 Macross hits shelves in November 2026 with a price tag of 99,000 yen (approximately $620 USD). Pre-orders open June 1. This is the kind of premium collectible aimed squarely at longtime Macross fans and serious toy enthusiasts willing to invest in museum-quality display pieces.

Given the franchise's enduring appeal—spawning multiple series, films, and spin-offs over four and a half decades—expect this release to move quickly among collectors.
