The Chainsmoker Cat anime is getting the two-version treatment. The official website announced that episodes will come in an uncut "Evil Dragon Unleashed" version designed to "respect the work's directorial intent," plus a broadcast-safe "On-Air" version for terrestrial television.

The uncut version lands on AT-X (a premium subscription service) and multiple Japanese platforms including Netflix, Hulu, DMM TV, Fuji TV On Demand, and AnimeFesta. Anime Times will carry both versions, while 16 additional streaming services will only get the broadcast cut.

This two-tier approach makes sense given the source material. The original manga by Nyan Nyan Factory—serialized in Kodansha's Young Magazine and licensed in English by Seven Seas—leans heavily into toilet humor and gross-out comedy. The story follows Yani, a catgirl chain-smoker whose apartment is basically a disaster zone of cigarette butts and trash. She's constantly battling her addiction while living in a world where humans, catgirls, and similar species coexist.

The anime brings together a solid creative team. Director Taku Kimura (known for "Tattooine Rhapsody" from Star Wars: Visions) is helming production at Bibury Animation Studio, while Takashi Aoshima handles scripts for The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You. Character designer Riki Matsuura and composer Keiichi Suzuki (Tokyo Godfathers, Saint Young Men) round out the core staff.

The voice cast includes Yūko Natsuyoshi as Yani, Misato Matsuoka, Yurie Funato, and Ayaka Shimizu in supporting roles. Rock band Wasureranneyo performs the opening theme "Nanmonee," while Necry Talkie handles the ending "Kemuri to Blue" (Smoke and Blue).

The series hits Tokyo MX and BS11 on July 2 at 24:30 (technically July 3 at 12:30 a.m.), with AT-X airing it starting July 25. Whether you're chasing the full uncut experience or settling for the broadcast version, Chainsmoker Cat looks like a comedy that won't pull punches—or hold back the smoke.
