Criterion Channel Adds Classic Anime Films This March

Criterion Channel, known for its carefully curated selection of classic and influential films, is adding two beloved anime titles to its streaming library in March: Gunbuster: The Movie and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

This marks another step in Criterion's growing recognition of anime as serious cinema worthy of preservation and critical analysis. The streaming service has become increasingly important for anime fans seeking high-quality presentations of classic series and films.

Gunbuster: The Movie compiles the iconic 1988 OVA series from studio Gainax into a feature-length format. Directed by Hideaki Anno (who would later create Neon Genesis Evangelion), Gunbuster combines mecha action with hard science fiction concepts about time dilation and space warfare. The series is considered a landmark work that helped establish many conventions of modern mecha anime.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex represents the acclaimed TV series iteration of Masamune Shirow's cyberpunk universe. Set in a near-future Japan, it follows the members of Public Security Section 9 as they investigate cyber-crimes and terrorism. The series is praised for its thoughtful exploration of technology's impact on society and identity.

Both titles joining Criterion Channel highlights the platform's commitment to showcasing anime that has influenced cinema and popular culture. For anime fans, this provides an opportunity to experience these classics through Criterion's typically excellent streaming quality and presentation.
