Crunchyroll Japan's Profit Plummets 63% Despite Hitting 21 Million Subscribers
Crunchyroll Japan reported a dramatic 63% drop in net profit to 453 million yen for 2025, even as the streaming platform crossed 21 million paid subscribers globally. The decline follows a restructuring and employee layoffs in March.

Crunchyroll Japan's financial performance took a significant hit in 2025, according to filings in Japan's Kanpo gazette. The streaming giant's net profit fell to 453 million yen (about $2.85 million) for the fiscal year ending in December 2025—a steep 63% decline from the previous year's 1.239 billion yen ($7.79 million).
The timing is notable given that Crunchyroll announced reaching 21 million paid subscribers globally in May 2026, suggesting subscriber growth hasn't translated to improved profitability for its Japanese operations. The company attributed the financial pressure partly to a restructuring initiative that occurred in March 2026, which involved layoffs and a redistribution of roles based on employee location.
Crunchyroll emphasized that the restructuring wasn't a pure cost-cutting measure. Instead, the company cited a strategic shift in its e-commerce operations as a primary driver of the organizational changes. This distinction suggests the company is repositioning how it handles merchandise and ancillary revenue streams alongside its core streaming business.
Crunchyroll operates as a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment (U.S.) and Aniplex (Japan), with both companies ultimately under Sony Group's umbrella. Sony's Funimation Global Group completed its acquisition of Crunchyroll from AT&T in August 2021 for $1.175 billion, consolidating much of the U.S. anime streaming market under one corporate structure.
The profit decline raises questions about the sustainability of Crunchyroll's business model in competitive streaming markets, particularly as the company continues investing in anime production and licensing while managing operational costs. Whether the restructuring measures will successfully stabilize the Japan branch's finances remains to be seen as the company moves forward with its strategic pivot.
