Crunchyroll is giving fans an early taste of the upcoming Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You anime by releasing 12 mini-episodes—each running 10 minutes—that cover the first six episodes of the series in chronological order. The episodes are live now on the platform across North America, Europe, South America, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and India.

The anime itself will formally premiere in July on TBS and 27 other Japanese channels, airing Thursday nights at 11:56 p.m. JST. The early mini-episode release aligns with limited advance streaming on Japan's ABEMA service, which launched the same day.

Based on Jinushi's manga, which started on X/Twitter in March 2022 before serializing in Square Enix's Big Gangan magazine, the story follows Sasaki, a burned-out office worker who finds unexpected connection at a supermarket. After missing his favorite cashier Yamada's shift one evening, he encounters Tayama, a girl in a biker jacket, who invites him to a secret smoking spot—sparking an unlikely friendship.

Asahi Production is handling animation with directors Tadato Suzuki and Aoi Mori (both from Gushing Over Magical Girls). The voice cast includes Takuya Satō as Sasaki and Seena Hoshiki as Yamada/Tayama, alongside supporting performers Shinya Takahashi, Toa Yukinari, Megumi Toyoguchi, and others.

Mio Inoue (A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace) is overseeing scripts, while character designer Yasuka Ōtaki previously worked on several recent projects. The music side features composers Shin Kōno and Sayaka Aoki, with rock band ZUTOMAYO performing the opening theme and musician imase handling the ending track "Fiction."

The manga has been available globally through Manga UP! Global since April 2023, giving international audiences a chance to explore the source material before the anime's official debut.
