Crunchyroll is making a significant shift to its merchandise business: starting in August, the Crunchyroll Store will be available exclusively to subscribers on the Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan tiers.

The company announced the change on Tuesday, though a specific cutoff date will be revealed later. Currently, the store is open to all subscribers, but basic Fan Tier members will lose access once the transition happens. Open orders will continue to ship regardless of tier status, and Crunchyroll gift cards will be accepted through August 14.

After the transition, the updated store will focus on "curated drops and Crunchyroll-exclusive merch," suggesting a more limited but specialized product rotation. The timing coincides with a Summer Sale that started the same day the announcement was made.

This restriction removes one of the perks that previously differentiated higher tiers. Mega Fan members currently receive a 10% discount and free shipping on orders over $50, while Ultimate Fan subscribers get 15% off and free shipping site-wide, plus an annual member swag bag and exclusive merchandise access. Those existing discounts will also end on August 14.

The move comes roughly six months after Crunchyroll raised subscription prices across the board. The Fan Tier went from $7.99 to $9.99 monthly, Mega Fan from $11.99 to $13.99, and Ultimate Fan from $15.99 to $17.99. The company also eliminated free, ad-supported streaming at the end of 2025.

Crunchyroll's merchandise operation expanded significantly after acquiring Right Stuf in August 2022. The company migrated Right Stuf's entire product catalog to the Crunchyroll Store in October 2023, creating a larger inventory. Now, by restricting store access to premium tiers, Crunchyroll is consolidating its e-commerce strategy while pushing subscribers toward higher-tier memberships.

With 21 million paid subscribers globally as of May, the streaming giant appears confident that limiting store access won't significantly impact retention among its subscriber base.
