Ishimori Production's new Cyborg 009: Nemesis adaptation is filling out its cast list, with actor Mitsuaki Kanuka joining as Cyborg 006/Chang Changku. The announcement comes as the production has been revealing cast members for both the heroic cyborg squad and their enemies, the Nemesis group.

The anime follows the classic premise: a shadowy organization called Black Ghost captures nine individuals and transforms them into cyborg soldiers. The cyborgs rebel against their captors and fight to stop Black Ghost's plans to trap the world in perpetual conflict.

Yūki Kaji leads the cast as Joe Shimamura/Cyborg 009, with Yuu Hayashi as Cyborg 008/Pyunma and Kentarō Tone as Cyborg 007/Great Britain. Kanuka rounds out the cyborg roster as the sixth member.

The production has also unveiled the full Nemesis group—a rival squad of enhanced soldiers. This ensemble includes some recognizable voices: Yūichi Nakamura as Graviton, Ayane Sakura as Deps, Maaya Uchida as Morphone, and Hiroshi Kamiya as Crack, among others.

Directed by Hideki Ambo at Arect, the anime features character design by sanorin and screenplay by Atsuhiro Tomioka (Pokémon) and CHARATEX. The opening theme "Taga Tame ni" (For Whom) is performed by Kyōko from rock band Barbee Boys—the same song used for the 1979 Cyborg 009 series, with lyrics originally penned by creator Shōtarō Ishinomori.

This is far from the franchise's first anime adaptation. Ishinomori's original 1964 manga has inspired multiple TV series (1968, 1979, 2001), films (1966, 1967, 1980), and more recent projects including 009 Re:Cyborg (2012) and Cyborg 009 Call of Justice (2016). A crossover OVA with Devilman arrived in 2015.

Cyborg 009: Nemesis will stream this summer, marking the franchise's return to anime after a decade since the last theatrical film.
