The Fairy Princess Minky Momo franchise is making a comeback. A new original video anime titled Mahō no Princess Minky Momo Akogare no Yume e Magokoro no Duo (Fairy Princess Minky Momo: A Duo of Sincerity Toward a Dream of Longing) will premiere in Japanese theaters on November 13. This marks the franchise's first new OVA since 1994's Minky Momo in The Station of Your Memories—a 32-year gap.

The story takes a timely turn. Set in Diginarsa, a magical land sustained by dream energy, the kingdom faces extinction as humans lose their ability to dream and hope. The land's king sends three companions to recruit Minky Momo for help. On her 12th birthday, a girl named Momo receives a smartphone and awakens as the magical girl after meeting the king's emissaries. She takes on the mission to restore Diginarsa's fading dream energy.

However, Momo discovers a problem: a mysterious app is spreading through the city, but the "dreams" children share are hollow—driven only by desires for attention and social media clout. This disconnect forces Momo to grapple with what true dreams actually mean in a world obsessed with validation.

The production brings together veteran talent. Director Ayumu Watanabe (Witch Hat Atelier, Space Brothers) is helming the film at Ashi Production. Character designs come from Hiroshi Watanabe, who animated the original 1982-1983 series, and Mari Tominaga, a key animator on the last OVA. Deko Akao (Arakawa Under the Bridge) wrote the script, with Tomoki Hasegawa (Cherry Magic!) composing the score.

The original Minky Momo anime, which aired from 1982-1983, followed a magical princess sent to Earth to help people recover their lost hopes and dreams. English-dubbed versions of the classic series became available on Amazon Prime Video in 2015 through William Winckler Productions.

MOVIC and Giggly Box are distributing the new OVA. No international release details have been announced yet.
