Fantasia Film Fest Brings Three Anime Projects to Montreal This July
The 30th Fantasia International Film Festival will premiere three anime projects in July, including CloverWorks' three-part collection Grotesqqque, episodes from the live-action Junji Ito adaptation, and the film A New Dawn.

The 30th Fantasia International Film Festival has announced a strong anime lineup for its July 16–August 2 run in Montreal, featuring world premieres, North American debuts, and international screenings across multiple formats.
CloverWorks is bringing Grotesqqque, a three-part anime collection making its world premiere. The project consists of three distinct segments: "A(E)liens," "Yoroshiku★girl," and "Nocturne: Nuit Grotesque." The studio's willingness to experiment with anthology-style storytelling positions this as one of the fest's more unconventional anime offerings.
The festival will also screen two episodes from Strange: Junji Ito's Tales for Sleepless Nights, a live-action omnibus series based on 13 horror manga stories by the legendary horror creator. "The Rib Woman" and "Face Thief" will have their world premieres, bringing Ito's twisted narrative style to live-action filmmaking.
On the theatrical side, A New Dawn (produced by ASMIK Ace and French studio Miyu Productions) will receive its North American premiere. The film also marks a rare collaboration between Japanese and European animation studios.
The anime adaptation of Machiko Kyō's Cocoon manga, titled cocoon – One Summer of Girlhood, will make its Canadian premiere at the festival.
Beyond these headline titles, Fantasia's Animation Plus section includes the North American premiere of the Sekiro: No Defeat anime and world premieres of several international short films from directors including Haruki Kasugamori, Nagomi Ueno, and others. The festival will also screen the world premiere of the Cherry and Virgin film in its Animation Plus section.
For fans outside Montreal, this lineup represents a rare opportunity to catch early screenings of projects that may take months to reach wider distribution. Fantasia has built a reputation as a premier venue for adventurous anime and animation programming, making this year's selections a testament to the festival's continued commitment to genre storytelling and cross-cultural collaboration.
The festival runs July 16–August 2 in Montreal.
