Final Fantasy XIV Mobile Shutting Down in China, Global Version Canceled
Square Enix and Tencent announced that Final Fantasy XIV Mobile will end service in mainland China on September 30, 2026. The companies also confirmed they've canceled plans for a global release of the mobile game.

Square Enix and Tencent have decided to pull the plug on Final Fantasy XIV Mobile, the mobile adaptation of the popular MMORPG. The Chinese mainland version will shut down on September 30, 2026, with in-game purchases and new registrations already suspended as of the announcement on Friday. Customer support and forums will close by October 15.
The closure comes less than 15 months after the game's June 2025 launch in China. Lightspeed Studios, a Tencent subsidiary known for developing PUBG Mobile, created the mobile version following Square Enix's announcement of the project in November 2024.
In a statement, the companies cited "adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment" as reasons for terminating their licensing agreement. They also extended an apology to players anticipating the global version, confirming those plans are now scrapped.
This reversal comes as a disappointment for fans hoping to experience Final Fantasy XIV on mobile devices outside China. The original MMORPG, which launched on PC in 2010 and later expanded to PlayStation and Xbox platforms, remains active with a dedicated player base. The game has accumulated just under 35 million registered accounts worldwide as of April 2026, and Square Enix committed to supporting it for at least 10 years starting in 2022.
The main game continues to thrive with regular updates and expansions. The most recent expansion, "Dawntrail," released in July 2024, and Square Enix has announced an upcoming expansion titled "Evercold" scheduled for January 2027.
While the mobile venture didn't pan out, the core Final Fantasy XIV experience remains strong across its established platforms, suggesting Square Enix will continue focusing resources there rather than pursuing mobile spin-offs in the near term.
