A fresh take on the legendary Fist of the North Star has arrived on Amazon Prime, but critics aren't celebrating. The new CGI-animated series is facing backlash over its animation quality and voice performance, with reviewers questioning how such a foundational franchise ended up in such rough shape.
The core issue centers on how poorly the 1980s character designs translate to CGI. Reviewers note the animation feels stiff and lifeless, with minimal character movement throughout scenes. The comparison to Berserk 2016—widely considered one of anime's biggest missteps—has become unavoidable, raising questions about whether the industry learned anything from that disaster.
The English dub compounds these problems. The voice work, handled by South African studio Transperfect Media, sounds stilted and unconvincing, with line delivery that feels phonetically recited rather than naturally performed. One particularly awkward moment: the year "199X" is pronounced as "One-hundred-ninety-nine X" instead of the intended shorthand.
The dialogue delivery became so unnatural that some viewers initially suspected AI generation, though the performances are actually human. Transperfect Media, known for affordable voiceover work rather than traditional voice acting, appears to have prioritized budget over quality on this project.
This adaptation raises broader questions about Amazon Prime's anime acquisition strategy. The platform has secured legitimately prestigious titles like CITY The Animation and the forthcoming Ghost in the Shell remake, yet somehow approved this problematic take on such an important series. Critics struggle to understand how leadership greenlit the project after seeing the character renders, let alone allowed it to premiere as the platform's second-most prominent anime.
Fist of the North Star's legacy as a foundational work that shaped modern anime makes this adaptation particularly disappointing. The source material's appeal clearly exists here somewhere, but it's buried under what critics describe as an embarrassingly executed production that does the franchise no favors.
