Masaya Tsunamoto, the writer behind the long-running Giant Killing manga, is teaming up with artist Demo for a fresh series launching next month. Shūgaku Ryokō ~Kyoto・Nara 4-paku 4-nichi (School Trip ~Kyoto・Nara 4 Nights & 4 Days) will debut in Bessatsu Shōnen Champion's August issue, hitting shelves on July 15.

The story centers on a second-year high school class trip to Kyoto that kicks off on October 8. One student, Takeuchi, draws attention for his unusually somber demeanor while his classmates chat happily on the bus. Unknown to those around him, Takeuchi is caught in a mysterious supernatural phenomenon that no one else can perceive—setting up the core tension of the series.

Tsunamoto has been prolific in recent years. He recently launched A New Player is Substituting In, a baseball manga drawn by artist Yūichirō Oka, in Weekly Shōnen Champion on April 2. He's also known for the ongoing Mr. CB soccer series with illustrator Isao Tanishima, which has been running in Young Champion since 2018 and has reached 18 compiled volumes.

Tsunamoto and Tanishima also collaborated on an Atlanta 1996 special manga project focused on the 1996 Olympics, which began regular serialization in March 2025 after a "pre-start" story in October 2024. The project features characters from the Mr. CB universe reminiscing about the Atlanta Games.

But Tsunamoto's most recognizable work remains Giant Killing, the soccer manga that launched in Kodansha's Weekly Morning back in 2007. The series inspired a 2010 television anime that Crunchyroll streamed during its original run, though the anime was removed from the platform in November 2012. The manga itself continues strong, with Kodansha recently shipping the 69th volume in Japan. English readers can access the series digitally through Kodansha USA Publishing, which has been releasing it since March 2017.

Demo announced the new collaboration on social media, expressing enthusiasm about working with Tsunamoto on the project.
