Hideo Yamamoto, creator of cult classics like Ichi the Killer and Homunculus, is back with fresh material. The prolific manga artist will debut Suiken Japan (Drunken Fist Japan) in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine on July 6, as announced in the magazine's current issue.

The series centers on an older man who becomes formidable in combat once he drinks, based on the promotional tagline "This old man is unstoppable when he drinks." It's a premise that leans into action-comedy territory, a shift from some of Yamamoto's darker previous works.

This marks Yamamoto's return to serialization following the conclusion of HIKARI-MAN in June 2020. That series had a complicated run spanning six years—it launched in Weekly Big Comic Spirits in 2014 but faced multiple hiatuses, including a research break from April 2016 to May 2018, and wrapped up with eight collected volumes.

Yamamoto's manga portfolio spans horror, psychological thriller, and action genres. Ichi the Killer, perhaps his most famous work, inspired live-action film adaptations directed by Takashi Miike and an original video anime distributed by Central Park Media. Homunculus and Voyeur have also found international audiences through English translations by Viz Media. He's also collaborated with renowned artist Ryōichi Ikegami (known for Crying Freeman) on the 2015 series Adam to Eve, which ran for two volumes.

Yamamoto's choice to serialize in Big Comic Spirits, an ongoing magazine for adult readers, keeps him in familiar territory. The magazine has been his primary home for major projects over the past decade, making Suiken Japan his next chapter in a long career defined by distinctive visual storytelling and unconventional narratives.

Fans of his previous work will likely be curious how this drunken-fighter concept fits into his broader artistic vision. With the series kicking off July 6, manga readers won't have to wait long to find out.
