K2 Pictures has announced two major projects backed by its newly established K2P Film Fund I, both unveiled at prestigious international festivals.

The first is a theatrical anime adaptation of Gigant, Hiroya Oku's supernatural manga that ran in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior from December 2017 to September 2021. This marks K2 Pictures' first animated feature. The story follows Rei Yokoyamada, a high schooler inspired to make films, who encounters Papico, an adult film star, just before she becomes caught in a bizarre phenomenon that transforms her into a giant. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the English version of the completed 10-volume series.

The second project is a musical film adaptation of The Book of Human Insects, Osamu Tezuka's experimental manga from his 100th Anniversary Project slate. Ken Ninomiya will direct. The film tells the story of Toshiko Tomura, a brilliant young woman who wins Japan's prestigious Akutagawa Prize before mysteriously retreating from the public eye. The narrative weaves together journalists, anarchists, and shadowy power brokers as it traces her unconventional rise. Unlike typical hero narratives, Tezuka's work presents a protagonist driven by self-interest in a world without traditional heroes. Vertical publishes the English edition. A live-action TV adaptation previously aired in 2011, and the Tezuka Estate confirmed NHK is also producing a new live-action version.

The musical film was pitched at Berlin's European Film Market in February as part of the Spotlight on Japan event, indicating international interest in bringing Tezuka's complex work to cinema audiences.

These announcements signal K2 Pictures' ambition to expand beyond traditional anime production into prestige theatrical projects. The timing at major film festivals—Cannes for Gigant and Berlin's EFM for The Book of Human Insects—suggests the studio is positioning both properties for global distribution and festival consideration rather than limiting them to anime-specific audiences.
