Kenji Kamiyama, the visionary director behind Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, is taking the helm of Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, an all-new anime coming in 2027 from Sola Animation. Bandai Namco Filmworks revealed the project at San Diego Comic-Con International this week.

Kamiyama isn't just directing—he's also handling the series scripts, while Toh Enjoe (The Ghost in the Shell, Godzilla Singular Point) is building out the anime's science fiction world. The collaboration marks a significant investment in what Bandai is calling the "RG Project," a next-generation Gundam initiative designed to expand the franchise into entirely new territory.

The story kicks off in a world reshaped by catastrophe. An Autonomous Interstellar Object from another galaxy arrived and revealed three revolutionary technologies: Gravity Control, FTL Communication, and Cognitive Materialization. Humanity flourished—until the Object suddenly went rogue, spawning a self-replicating, hostile ecosystem that forced humanity to abandon Earth entirely. The year of that apocalypse becomes year one "After Apocalypse" (A.A. 1). By A.A. 45, when the anime begins, an entire generation born in lunar colonies and space stations has never known life without the Apocalypse. The story follows Ray Azumi, a boy awakening on the lunar surface.

Kamiyama was explicit about the creative freedom at stake: the RG Project exists in a completely separate timeline from Gundam's traditional Universal Century. That means starting from scratch. "What would replace the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon?" Kamiyama explained. "What would become of the Newtype concept? What about Minovsky particles? And where did war fit into all of this?" These foundational questions drive the entire project.

The RG Project extends beyond just anime. Gundam Rogue Orbit, a previously announced game, is also headline content—though its story takes place 90 years after the anime. Kamiyama hinted that both the anime and game are just the beginning, with more elements coming to the franchise.

This is a major coup for anime fans familiar with Kamiyama's cerebral, atmospheric direction. His work on Ghost in the Shell and Star Wars: Visions' "The Ninth Jedi" suggests Gundam RG XARX-ZERO will push the mecha genre into thoughtful, visually distinctive territory.
