Takata's light novel series Class de 2-banme ni Kawaii Onnanoko to Tomodachi ni Natta (I Became Friends with the Second Cutest Girl in the Class.) is ending with its tenth volume, set to release July 1. The announcement came from illustrator Azuri Hyuuga's official X account on Wednesday.

The romantic comedy began as a web serial on Kakuyomu in November 2020 before Kadokawa picked it up for publication under its Sneaker Bunko imprint. Since launching in print in December 2021, the series has sold 1.6 million cumulative copies across physical and digital formats. The ninth volume hit shelves in April.

The light novel's success led to multiple adaptations. A manga version started serialization on the Alive+ web service in July 2022, with Yen Press handling the English-language release beginning in December 2024. Volume eight arrives June 26, while volume three ships to English readers on June 23.

Most recently, a television anime adaptation premiered this spring through Connect, bringing the story to a new audience. Crunchyroll simulcasted all 12 episodes with subtitles in multiple languages, making the series accessible to international viewers.

The series has earned significant recognition within the industry. It won the Special Prize in the Romantic Comedy category at the 6th Kakuyomu Web Novel Contest and took first place in the Next Light Novel Award's 2023 paperback category. Kadokawa named it the best-selling new light novel series of 2022.

The story follows Maehara Maki, a high school student who struggled with forming connections until meeting Asanagi, a girl known secretly as the "second cutest girl in class." Despite her nickname and the attention she receives, Asanagi chooses to spend time with Maki, forming an unlikely friendship that drives the narrative.
