A live-action film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's Look Back one-shot manga will hit Japanese theaters on September 11. The project, directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters, Our Little Sister), revealed its expanded cast this week via a new trailer.

Masaki Suda joins the film as Maeda, a Weekly Shōnen Jump manga editor. The supporting ensemble includes Kankurō Kudō as Tamai, a grade school teacher; Kayo Noro as Fujino's mother; Ryō Ikeda as Fujino's father; Miyu Sasaki as Fujino's older sister; and Maho Yamada as a middle school teacher named Manabe.

Kore-eda is directing, editing, and writing the screenplay. Yūta Bandō, who composed for BELLE and Kaiju No. 8, is handling the score. The production includes cinematography by Senzo Ueno, art direction by Shinsuke Kojima, and costume design by Sachiko Ito, among other key crew roles.

The film already made its international debut at the 79th Cannes International Film Festival in May. GKIDS, which distributed an anime adaptation of Look Back, will release this live-action version theatrically in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Ireland in 2026.

Fujimoto's original one-shot manga debuted on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ in July 2021 and accumulated over 2.5 million views on its first day. Viz Media has published the story in English both digitally and in print. The manga follows two small-town girls—the confident Fujino and the reclusive Kyomoto—whose shared love of drawing manga brings them together as they navigate growing up.

An anime film adaptation of Look Back opened in Japanese theaters in June 2024, earning 227 million yen (approximately US$1.40 million) in its first three days and selling 135,000 tickets. GKIDS screened the anime version in North America in October 2024, where it earned US$688,253 during its opening weekend at the U.S. box office.

Fujimoto is also known for Chainsaw Man, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in December 2018 and concluded its opening arc in December 2020 before continuing in serialization.
