Made in Abyss fans have something to look forward to this fall. The staff behind Mezameru Shinpi (Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery)—the kickoff to a planned three-film series—released a teaser video this week, with the first installment arriving October 23.

The returning voice cast includes Mariya Ise as Reg, Miyu Tomita as Riko, Shiori Izawa as Nanachi, and Misaki Kuno as Faputa. Behind the scenes, director Masayuki Kojima (Black Bullet, Tibetan Dog) is helming the film at Kinema Citrus, with screenwriter Hideyuki Kurata (Samurai Flamenco) handling scripts. Character design duties fall to Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda, both veterans of previous Made in Abyss projects. Composer Kevin Penkin returns to score the film.

Before the new trilogy launches, Japan is getting a nostalgic reminder of where the franchise has been. The 2019 compilation films—Made in Abyss: Journey's Dawn and Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight—are screening for two weeks each in theaters, running May 22 through June 11.

This new film trilogy continues the story from Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the second anime season that aired in 2022 and concluded with a feature-length finale. That season adapted Akihito Tsukushi's manga and streamed on HIDIVE as it aired. Kadokawa announced the sequel project back in January 2023, and now the first chapter is nearly here.

For context, the franchise began with a 13-episode TV series in 2017, followed by the 2020 film Dawn of the Deep Soul. The property has consistently drawn audiences with its blend of adventure, mystery, and darker undertones—a formula that's resonated with both casual viewers and dedicated manga readers.

With the teaser now live and an October release window locked in, Made in Abyss appears ready to take fans deeper into the Abyss once again. More details about the film should emerge as we get closer to fall.
