The Made in Abyss anime film project is moving forward. Studio Kinema Citrus has revealed a new trailer, cast additions, and the theme song for Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi (Awakening Mystery), the opening film in a planned trilogy set to release October 23 in Japan.

The film welcomes two new cast members: Sumire Morohoshi (The Promised Neverland) voices Tepaste, and Takanori Hoshino (Mob Psycho 100 II) plays Cravagli. They join returning cast members Mariya Ise as Reg, Miyu Tomita as Riko, Shiori Izawa as Nanachi, and Misaki Kuno as Faputa.

Director Masayuki Kojima returns to helm the film, with screenwriter Hideyuki Kurata (Samurai Flamenco) handling the script. Character designers Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda, who worked on previous Made in Abyss projects, are back as well.

The theme song "Chain of the Abyss" is performed by series composer Kevin Penkin alongside musician and VTuber Mori Calliope. The track is featured in the newly released trailer, which gives fans their first look at footage from the film.

This trilogy announcement follows the success of Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the franchise's second season, which aired in 2022. The original 13-episode Made in Abyss series premiered in 2017 and spawned the 2020 film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul. Both the original series and subsequent seasons are available on streaming platforms including HIDIVE and Sentai Filmworks' digital releases.

Based on Akihito Tsukushi's ongoing manga, Made in Abyss follows a young girl named Riko and her robotic companion Reg as they descend into a mysterious and dangerous pit to uncover its secrets. The story blends adventure, mystery, and darker themes that have earned the franchise a dedicated fanbase worldwide.
