Nintendo Dominates Japan's Game Charts as Star Fox Takes the Top Spot
Nintendo's new Star Fox release jumped to number one on Japan's video game charts for June 22-28, with the Switch continuing its reign over the market. Classics like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons remain steady performers.

Nintendo's latest Star Fox entry claimed the top position on Japan's weekly game rankings for June 22-28, selling 41,680 copies in its debut week on Nintendo Switch. The release marks another win for the Japanese gaming giant, which continues to dominate the country's charts.
The Star Fox launch pushed aside competition from established franchises. Tomodachi Life held at number two with 28,543 copies sold, while Konami's baseball and soccer titles rounded out the top five. Nintendo's evergreen titles continue to move units months or years after release—Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still cracks the top 20 despite launching back in 2017, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons remains in the rankings nearly six years after its 2020 debut.
Several new releases debuted on the charts this week, including Medabots Card Robattle RB (ranked seventh) and The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales from Square Enix (ninth place). Interestingly, older ports and re-releases continue to find audiences; Minecraft Nippon remains a consistent performer on the Switch, while Splatoon 3 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate prove Nintendo's first-party lineup has enduring appeal.
The rankings reflect Japan's ongoing preference for Nintendo Switch software, with only one PlayStation 5 title—007 First Light—appearing in the top 20. Nintendo's stronghold on the Japanese market shows no signs of weakening, particularly as the company continues releasing new entries in beloved franchises while maintaining a steady stream of releases from its extensive back catalog.
These rankings come from Famitsu, Japan's leading video game sales tracker, and represent physical sales data for the week of June 22-28, 2026.
