Capcom announced Thursday that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will hit shelves three weeks earlier than planned. The game now launches September 4, 2026, instead of September 25 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch.

The studio revealed the new date via the game's official X/Twitter account, though no explanation was given for the acceleration. The move gives players earlier access to what's shaping up to be a significant entry in the long-running Onimusha franchise.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword continues Capcom's push to revitalize the series after a lengthy absence. The publisher released remastered versions of earlier titles to rebuild interest—Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny hit modern platforms in May 2025, following a 2019 remaster of the original Onimusha: Warlords. These rereleases tested fan appetite ahead of this new installment.

The franchise has expanded beyond games in recent years. Netflix debuted an anime adaptation of the series in November 2023, directed by Shin'ya Sugai at studio Sublimation, with legendary filmmaker Takashi Miike serving as supervising director. That series brought the Sengoku-era samurai action to a global audience and likely helped drive demand for fresh Onimusha content.

The original Onimusha series launched in 2001, blending the historical Sengoku period with supernatural horror elements. Games retell stories from that era of Japanese history but infuse them with demons, curses, and otherworldly threats. The formula proved popular enough to spawn multiple sequels, a CG film in 2006, and now the anime adaptation.

With the September 4 launch date now locked, fans won't have to wait long to get their hands on the new game. Whether Way of the Sword will mark a proper revival for the dormant franchise remains to be seen, but the early release suggests Capcom has confidence in what they're delivering.
