Princess Ai Manga Gets 20th Anniversary Collection via Kickstarter
247 Comics is launching a Kickstarter campaign for a 20th Anniversary Collection of Misaho Kujiradou's Princess Ai manga, featuring the original trilogy, rare vault material, and exclusive extras.

Princess Ai, the cult classic manga that blended rock star fantasy with cross-cultural storytelling, is getting a special treatment to mark two decades since its debut.
247 Comics, a U.S.-based indie publisher, will launch a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for a 20th Anniversary Collection of the series. The new edition will bundle together the original trilogy along with rare vault material and additional extras, though 247 Comics hasn't yet announced the exact launch date for the campaign.
The anniversary edition promises to revisit the story of Ai, a mysterious girl who becomes a rock star icon while navigating love, rebellion, and conflict between two worlds. According to the campaign description, she's "lost in the neon streets of Shinjuku with only a heart-shaped box, a hypnotic voice, and fragments of a destiny she could not yet understand."
Princess Ai has an unusual pedigree in the manga world. The original concept came from Courtney Love and D.J. Milky (Stu Levy), with character designs by Ai Yazawa, the artist behind beloved series like NANA and Paradise Kiss. The manga ran in Shinshokan's Wings magazine from 2004 to 2005, and Tokyopop published the English version during the same period.
The franchise expanded with a sequel, Princess Ai: The Prism of Midnight Dawn, which launched in 2008 and ran for three volumes. That installment was written by Christine Boylan and Stuart Levy.
This 20th Anniversary Collection comes on the heels of a publishing partnership announced in February between Tokyopop and 247 Comics, which specializes in creator-owned and creator-led graphic novels. The collaboration signals renewed interest in bringing classic titles back into circulation for both longtime fans and newcomers discovering the series for the first time.
Details about reward tiers, pricing, and shipping information should arrive once the Kickstarter campaign goes live.
