Kodansha's YanMaga Web has greenlit a Japanese serialization of Daisaku Tsuru's Protocol Ryugu manga, set to premiere on June 18. The ocean science fiction series originally appeared in a special English-language edition of Weekly Young Magazine last year and was selected as one of the titles eligible for reader voting.

The manga follows a premise with post-apocalyptic stakes: in a world frozen over by ice, a group that obtains a UFO rises to become Earth's rulers. It's a high-concept setup that blends hard science fiction elements with survival drama—right in line with Tsuru's track record.

Tsuru is no stranger to serialization. They previously ran nacuN in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine from 2006 to 2010. More recently, Mushinuyun serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior starting in 2013, eventually wrapping after six volumes in 2018. Most recently, Uichi no Shima debuted on Shinchosha's Kurage Bunch website in November 2023, concluding its run with a fifth and final volume in December of that year.

The decision to move Protocol Ryugu to YanMaga Web marks another step in the manga's expansion beyond its English-language debut. Kodansha's digital platform has become a significant launchpad for serialized works, particularly for titles testing audience reception through special issues. The fact that Protocol Ryugu earned its shot at a full serialization suggests it resonated with readers during its initial English release.

For fans of speculative fiction and manga exploring survival scenarios, Protocol Ryugu offers something different—a premise that treats the frozen world as a backdrop for political upheaval rather than just a setting. The UFO element adds an unpredictable wildcard factor that could push the narrative in unexpected directions.

YanMaga Web readers can start following the series when it launches on June 18.
