The manga adaptation of author Manabu Kaminaga's Shinrei Tantei Yakumo INITIAL FILE novels is back in action. Serialization resumes June 5 on Kadokawa's KadoComi app, picking up from where it left off earlier this year.

The manga launched last June to mark two decades since Kaminaga first introduced the Psychic Detective Yakumo universe in 2004. Suzuka Oda, who previously illustrated the original Psychic Detective Yakumo manga adaptation, continues as the artist for this spinoff series, titled Shinrei Tantei Yakumo INITIAL FILE Shikō no Bias (Psychic Detective Yakumo INITIAL FILE: Bias of Thought).

What makes this adaptation interesting is its premise: it brings together two characters from different Kaminaga series. The story centers on mathematician Gakuto Mikoshiba, who appears in Kaminaga's other work Kakuritsu Sōsa-ka (Probability Investigator), as he matches wits with Yakumo Saito from the Psychic Detective Yakumo franchise.

The Psychic Detective Yakumo series remains one of Kaminaga's most enduring creations. Since its 2004 launch, the novels have sold 7 million copies and spawned extensive media adaptations—including a 2010 television anime acquired by Sentai Filmworks, a 2006 live-action series, multiple manga adaptations, and stage plays. The original 12-volume novel series concluded in May 2020, but the INITIAL FILE spinoff novels continue expanding the universe.

Suzuka Oda's involvement brings continuity to the manga adaptations; she previously drew a Psychic Detective Yakumo manga that ran in Kadokawa's Monthly Asuka magazine from 2009 to 2016, reaching 14 compiled volumes. This new project marks another chapter in the character's multiformat legacy.

For fans of the franchise, the return of serialization offers a fresh entry point into the Psychic Detective Yakumo world without requiring deep familiarity with earlier stories. The KadoComi platform makes it accessible to international audiences following Kadokawa's digital expansion.
