Red River Shojo Manga Gets TV Anime Adaptation This Summer

After years of waiting, fans of classic shojo manga can celebrate: Chie Shinohara's Red River is getting an anime adaptation this summer. The series will be produced by Tatsunoko Production, the studio behind classics like Speed Racer and more recent hits like Bakugan.

Directing the adaptation is Kōsuke Kobayashi, who previously worked on Waccha PriMagi! This marks an exciting return to shojo storytelling for the studio, bringing together experienced talent to adapt this beloved manga.

Red River (also known as Anatolia Story) originally ran from 1995 to 2002 and follows Yuri Suzuki, a modern Japanese high school student who gets transported back to ancient Anatolia (modern-day Turkey) during the Hittite Empire. The story combines romance, historical drama, and adventure as Yuri becomes entangled in palace intrigue and political conflicts.

The manga was particularly popular for its detailed historical research and strong female protagonist. Shinohara spent considerable time researching Hittite culture and ancient Anatolian history, creating one of the most historically grounded shojo series of its era.

For newer anime fans, this adaptation represents a chance to experience a classic shojo story that influenced many modern romance and historical anime. The combination of time travel, ancient civilizations, and political drama made Red River stand out in the crowded shojo manga field.

With summer approaching, fans can look forward to seeing how Tatsunoko Production brings this epic historical romance to life on screen.
