Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc is taking a planned break from serialization. The manga won't appear in the August issue of Shueisha's Jump SQ. magazine and will return in September, according to an announcement in July's issue.

Creator Nobuhiro Watsuki and his wife Kaoru Kurosaki, who collaborates on the story, have maintained an irregular release schedule for the Hokkaido Arc since its 2017 debut. The series has dealt with multiple hiatuses over the years, most notably a lengthy break starting in 2017 that stretched into 2018, followed by another extended hiatus from June 2024 through early 2025. Watsuki's ongoing health concerns have been cited as the primary reason for these gaps.

The Hokkaido Arc manga picked up steam earlier this year, returning in March and September 2025 after its longest absence. These one-month breaks, while disruptive, represent a relatively stable rhythm compared to the months-long hiatuses fans endured previously.

Meanwhile, the anime adaptation of the main Rurouni Kenshin series continues moving forward. The second season, "Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Disturbance," aired throughout late 2024 and aired for a full half-year run across two consecutive quarters. Crunchyroll streamed both seasons, and an English dub is available. A third season is confirmed.

The original Rurouni Kenshin manga, which launched in 1994, remains one of anime and manga's most enduring properties. The series has spawned numerous adaptations including a 95-episode TV anime, several OVAs, five live-action films, and a Takarazuka Revue stage musical. With over 72 million copies in circulation worldwide, the franchise shows no signs of fading.

Fans of the Hokkaido Arc will need to wait until September to see what's next for Kenshin Himura's story. Watsuki and Kurosaki's collaborative approach has proven fruitful when they can maintain momentum, so here's hoping the September return marks another sustained period of regular updates.
