Naoki Serizawa's Saru Lock Reboot manga is coming to an end. The series will publish its final chapter in Young King BULL magazine's next issue on June 1, with the 10th and final volume shipping on July 27.

Serizawa launched the reboot in October 2018, giving the beloved lockpicking comedy a second life over seven years later. The ninth volume released in March 2025, so readers are looking at a fairly quick wrap-up.

What Saru Lock Is About

The series follows Yatarō "Saru" Sarumaru, a silver-haired high school student who's an ordinary guy in most respects—he daydreams about idols and has terrible luck with romance. But he's also a lockpicking prodigy with a key advantage: his father's a locksmith, and there's no lock Saru can't crack. The premise plays out as an action comedy, blending his everyday struggles with increasingly wild heists.

A Storied History

The original Saru Lock manga debuted in 2003 and ran until 2009, when Kodansha published its 22nd and final volume. That version proved popular enough to inspire both a live-action film and TV adaptation in 2009, introducing the character to audiences beyond manga readers.

Serizawa has kept busy beyond Saru Lock Reboot. He also worked on Biohazard: Marhawa Desire (published as Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire in North America by Viz Media), a five-volume manga that ran from 2011 to 2013. More recently, he contributed as a monster designer for Yoshitaka Amano's Gibiate anime project.

With the reboot concluding, fans of the original series get closure on this revival while potentially leaving the door open for the character's next reinvention. Whether that's another adaptation or a completely new project remains to be seen—but for now, Saru Lock Reboot is saying goodbye.
