Sega and Ryu ga Gotoku Studio are taking the legendary Virtua Fighter franchise in a surprising new direction with Virtua Fighter Crossroads, announced at Summer Game Fest and set to release in 2027.

Instead of the traditional competitive fighting game formula, Crossroads is being designed as a narrative-driven action-adventure. The game centers around a theme of "crossroads" and follows four different protagonists, each with their own story, convictions, and burdens from their past. Players will navigate a fully explorable city, make meaningful choices both in and out of combat, and see how those decisions shape alliances and consequences throughout an interconnected story.

Sega describes the approach as "unconventional" while insisting it preserves the series' DNA—the signature three-button combat system and emphasis on pure, realistic fighting mechanics that made Virtua Fighter a pillar of the arcade era since 1993.

The creative team behind Crossroads brings serious pedigree. David Hayter, known for his work on X-Men and Watchmen, is supervising world building. Ghost of Tsushima's lead writer Brad Kayne heads the writing team, with scenario contributions from Tsuyoshi Furuta (Like A Dragon and Judgement series) and Shinji Yamamoto (Persona 5). That combination of Ryu ga Gotoku's storytelling expertise and prominent Hollywood writers suggests Sega is betting heavily on narrative depth.

The trailer reveals a new fighter called Cielo and emphasizes the phrase: "A city you've never seen, A story you've never heard, A totally new Virtua Fighter."

This represents a major creative shift for a franchise that defined 3D fighting games. While Virtua Fighter 5 remains the most recent mainline entry (with various updates through 2012), the series has been largely dormant as a competitive fighting title. By pivoting to story-driven gameplay with the Ryu ga Gotoku team—masters of character-driven action games—Sega appears to be experimenting with how to revive the franchise for modern audiences.

A story trailer aired during a June 6 showcase, though full details remain limited. More information will likely emerge as we approach the 2027 launch.
