Aniplex of America revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that 'Clockwork Girl,' the first installment in director Yasuomi Umetsu and animation studio Shaft's Virgin Punk original anime series, will hit digital platforms in September. The announcement came with a screening of the film's English dub trailer.

'Clockwork Girl' is set in 2099, a future where Medical Android Technology called Somadea has eliminated injury and illness—but also created new crime. When criminals illegally modify Somadea units to gain superhuman abilities, the government responds with a bounty hunter system. Civilians licensed to hunt these illegal Somadea users are paid handsomely for bringing in wanted criminals, dead or alive.

The story follows Ubu Kamigori, a bounty hunter making her living in this dangerous world. Her life takes a turn when a figure from her past, Mr. Elegance, appears at her door, setting her destiny in motion. What unfolds is a suspenseful action tale combining mechanical characters and gunpowder-fueled combat.

The film originally opened theatrically in Japan in June 2025 at select venues in Tokyo and Osaka, debuting at the top of mini-theater rankings. Aniplex of America and Fathom Entertainment later brought it to U.S. theaters in November 2025 with both Japanese audio and an English dub.

Uemetsu, known for earlier works like Kite and Mezzo, directs and handles character design. Yūya Takahashi (Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible, Lupin III: Part IV) manages series composition and scripting. The Japanese voice cast includes Saki Miyashita as Ubu Kamigori, Katsuyuki Konishi as Mr. Elegance, and Norio Wakamoto as Tommy J.

The digital release will make 'Clockwork Girl' more widely accessible after its limited theatrical run, allowing fans to experience Shaft's cyberpunk vision at home.
