Thunder 3 is getting its anime debut this week, and singer-songwriter Yuri has been tapped to perform the series' opening theme "Thunderbolt."

The anime launches on July 8 at 24:45 JST on Fuji TV's +Ultra programming block (effectively July 9 at 12:45 a.m. JST) and streams worldwide on Netflix the same day. The Japanese cast includes Sayumi Suzushiro as Pyontarō, Natsumi Kawaida as Tsubame, Eri Akiyama as Hiroshi, and Honoka Mitsubachi as Futaba.

Hiroyuki Seshita, known for his work on Knights of Sidonia and Ajin, directs the series, while Hiroshi Seko—a prolific writer on Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man—handles the scripts. The ending theme "Shururerira" comes from -otoha-.

Thunder 3 follows three ordinary high schoolers who find a mysterious DVD claiming to open a gateway to a parallel universe. When Pyontarō's little sister Futaba unexpectedly passes through, she's captured by aliens occupying that dimension. The boys soon realize their cartoonish bodies grant them superhuman abilities in the hyper-realistic parallel universe, giving them the edge they need to mount a rescue.

The series is an adaptation of Yuki Ikeda's manga, which launched in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine back in May 2022. The manga had a rocky road to completion—it entered its climax in January 2025 before going on hiatus in March due to Ikeda's health concerns. The series returned from that break in February and wrapped up on June 5. Kodansha USA publishes the English localization and will release the ninth compiled volume on July 16, with the eighth volume having shipped to North American readers in February.
