Star Wars is returning to anime this summer. Production I.G and Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Visions Presents - The Ninth Jedi, a limited anime series spinoff from the Star Wars: Visions project, will debut on Disney+ this season.

Anime Expo revealed the news on Tuesday and will host a special first-episode screening on July 2 with a panel featuring key staff members. The lineup includes director Shunsuke Tada (known for Kuroko's Basketball, STARMYU, and the Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These films), producer Hitoshi Itō (Star Wars: Visions, Attack on Titan The Final Season), and supervising director Kenji Kamiyama. Lucasfilm executives Jacqui Lopez and Josh Rimes will also participate. The screening will feature Japanese audio with English subtitles.

The Ninth Jedi represents an expansion of the Star Wars: Visions anthology—one of the original shorts from Volume 1 (which debuted on Disney+ in September 2021) is being developed into a full limited series with a longer narrative. This approach launched at Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025, where Lucasfilm announced plans to extend select stories from the anthology into extended formats.

The character and world of The Ninth Jedi have already appeared in the most recent installment. Volume 3 of Star Wars: Visions, which dropped on Disney+ in October, continued storylines from the first volume, including The Ninth Jedi. A separate short called The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope explored the backstory, showing a conflict that predates the original short's protagonist, Kara.

The original Star Wars: Visions anthology featured work from major Japanese anime studios including Trigger, Kinema Citrus, Kamikaze Douga, Science SARU, Production I.G, and Geno Studio. Volume 2, released on May 4, 2023 (Star Wars Day), expanded the scope to include studios from around the world—India, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Chile, France, South Africa, South Korea, and the United States—showing how the Star Wars universe resonates across global animation communities.

With The Ninth Jedi anime on the horizon, fans will get their first extended look at how this particular story unfolds in the Star Wars galaxy.
