Star Wars: Visions is getting longer. The anthology project revealed at Anime Expo that "The Ninth Jedi," originally a short from the first Star Wars: Visions collection, is being expanded into a full limited anime series launching August 5 on Disney+ and Hulu.

This marks the first time a Star Wars: Visions short is receiving the extended series treatment. Kenji Kamiyama, known for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Eden of the East, directed the original "Ninth Jedi" short and returns for the new series as supervising director and script supervisor. Shunsuke Tada (Kuroko's Basketball, Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These - Collision) takes over as series director, with Hitoshi Itō (Attack on Titan The Final Season) producing.

The Star Wars: Visions project has grown considerably since its September 2021 debut on Disney+. The first volume featured nine shorts from Japanese studios including Production I.G, Trigger, and Science SARU. Volume 2 expanded internationally in May 2023 with studios from India, the UK, Spain, and more. A third volume launched in October with new stories continuing earlier shorts, including "The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope."

By expanding "The Ninth Jedi" into a full series, Lucasfilm and Disney are capitalizing on one of the anthology's most popular entries. The new series will allow more room to develop Kara's story and the lore introduced in the original short. Both English-subtitled and English-dubbed versions will be available when the series launches.

The move signals potential for future Visions stories to receive similar expansions, though no other shorts have been announced for series development yet.
