Sega pulled back the curtain on Stranger Than Heaven during Summer Game Fest 2026, confirming the Ryu ga Gotoku Studio game arrives January 15 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Day one Game Pass availability is confirmed.

The game's star-studded roster blends Hollywood and anime talent. Yū Shirota leads as protagonist Makoto Daito, a mixed-race boy born to an American father and Japanese mother who stows away on a ship bound for Japan. Takaya Kuroda—known for voicing Kazuma Kiryu across the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series—joins the cast, alongside rapper Snoop Dogg as Orpheus and singer Tori Kelly as Suzy Day. The late Tupac also appears in the game, marking a unique posthumous casting.

Stranger Than Heaven spans 50 years across five Japanese settings and one American one, beginning in 1915 San Francisco. The narrative follows Makoto's journey after his tragic loss, taking him through Kokura (1915), Kure (1929), Minami, Osaka (1943), Atami (1951), and finally the fictional Kamurocho district in 1965 Tokyo—a familiar setting for RGG Studio fans.

Notably, the game features the late actor Bunta Sugawara as character Genzo Iwaki. Sega obtained formal consent from Sugawara's family and worked with Toei Company, which produced many of his films including the Battles Without Honor and Humanity series, to create his likeness using CG. Voice acting duties for Iwaki fall to Takashi Ukaji.

The expanded cast includes Akio Ōtsuka, Ado, and Yasukaze Motomiya—who previously portrayed Kazuma Kiryu in the live-action Like a Dragon adaptation. Additional confirmed cast members are Moeka Hoshi, Tokuma Nishioka, Satoshi Fujihara, and Cordell Broadus as The Veiled Stranger.

RGG Studio describes Stranger Than Heaven as a 50-year saga about those searching for belonging amid hardship. Makoto's fateful decision to board that ship in 1915 sets in motion a transformative journey that will reshape his entire life. The project represents the studio's most ambitious casting yet, bringing together international entertainment figures for a game exploring Japan's modern historical landscape.
