Two active sumo wrestlers are stepping into the recording booth for the first time. Tamawashi and Tamashoho, both members of Kataonami stable and natives of Mongolia, will voice characters in the upcoming historical anime Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia. Tamawashi plays Genghis Khan, founder of the Mongol Empire, while Tamashoho voices a Mongol soldier—and both will provide additional voices throughout the series.

The anime premieres with a one-hour special featuring Episodes 1 and 2 on July 4, 2026. In a special comment video released with the announcement, both wrestlers reflected on their first foray into voice acting. Tamawashi said the recording process felt challenging initially but grew more comfortable over time, while Tamashoho, a self-proclaimed anime fan, called it a fun and memorable experience.

The production boasts an impressive creative team. Naoko Yamada serves as executive director—her credits include K-On!, A Silent Voice, and The Heike Story. Director Abel Góngora, known for co-directing DAN DA DAN Season 2, rounds out the directorial duo. Studio Science SARU, recently acquired by TOHO, handles animation production. The studio's portfolio includes Devilman: Crybaby, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, and DAN DA DAN.

Other key staff members include character designer Kenichi Yoshida (Eureka Seven, Overman King Gainer) and composer Koshiro Hino, making his anime debut. Hino brings expertise in traditional instruments to the project.

The voice cast features established talent including Akira Sekine, Houko Kuwashima, and Daisuke Namikaze, among others. The series adapts A Witch's Life in Mongol, a historical manga written and illustrated by Tomato Soup.

Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia has already earned recognition ahead of its premiere—the series was selected for the TV Films category at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026, one of the world's most prestigious animation events. The festival runs June 21–27 in France.
