Bandai Namco just dropped a new trailer for Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, and it's highlighting one of the game's most intense features: Death Game Mode.

The action RPG puts you in the shoes of one of 10,000 players trapped in Aincrad, the virtual MMO-turned-death game from the original Sword Art Online story. You'll explore the world alongside familiar faces like Kirito and Asuna, but Death Game Mode adds real stakes—if your character dies, your save file is gone for good. Normally, you'd need to beat the game once before unlocking this mode, but the Deluxe Edition and higher tiers get early access.

Release and Editions

The game launches in Japan on July 9 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with PC via Steam following on July 10. Western players get everything on July 10 across all platforms.

Bandai Namco is offering four editions to choose from. The Standard Edition is your baseline experience. The Deluxe Edition adds expansion DLC, a starter item pack, and early Death Game Mode access. The Ultimate Edition bundles all that with a special bonus anime called "Unanswered//butterfly," a digital soundtrack, digital artbook, and in-game armor. For collectors, the Aincrad Edition (exclusive to Bandai Namco's store) includes everything from Ultimate plus physical merch: a beanie, wall scroll, patches, and stickers.

The "Unanswered//butterfly" anime follows other characters during the original Sword Art Online story events, adding extra narrative depth to the game's world.

The Music

Aimer, the Japanese vocalist behind numerous anime opening and ending themes, performs the game's theme song "Live to Survive."

Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad represents the franchise's latest expansion beyond its original web novel roots and anime adaptations. Reki Kawahara's series continues evolving with new story arcs like "Moon Cradle" and "Unital Ring," and this game adapts that spirit of exploration and danger into interactive form.
