Sword Art Online's Echoes of Aincrad Demo Launches This Week
Bandai Namco Entertainment unveiled a demo trailer for Echoes of Aincrad, a new action RPG set in the iconic Aincrad fortress. The demo launches Monday with five missions and multiple weapon types, ahead of the game's July release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Bandai Namco Entertainment America has released a demo trailer for Echoes of Aincrad, a fresh action RPG that drops players into the deadly virtual world of Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online franchise. The demo became available Monday and lets you try five missions while experimenting with different weapon types.
The game authentically recreates Aincrad, the iconic floating castle-fortress from the original story, where 10,000 players find themselves trapped in a death game. You'll explore the environment as one of those trapped players, teaming up with familiar characters like Kirito and Asuna along the way. Aimer performs the theme song "Live to Survive."
Echoes of Aincrad hits Japan on July 9 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with PC (Steam) following on July 10. Western players get all platforms on July 10.
Bandai Namco is offering four editions at launch. The Standard Edition is your baseline purchase. The Deluxe Edition adds expansion DLC, a starter item pack, and early access to the "Death Game" mode—a permadeath challenge that normally unlocks after beating the game once. The Ultimate Edition stacks on bonus content including a special anime called "Unanswered//butterfly," digital soundtrack, artbook, and exclusive armor. The Aincrad Edition, exclusive to the Bandai Namco Store, bundles everything with physical merch: a beanie, wall scroll, patches, and stickers.
That "Unanswered//butterfly" anime included with the Ultimate and Deluxe Editions is worth noting—it's a new promotional special that follows other characters during the events of the original Sword Art Online story, expanding the universe beyond what the game offers.
Sword Art Online began as Kawahara's web novel in 2001 before becoming a publishing phenomenon through Kadokawa's Dengeki Bunko imprint. The franchise has spawned multiple anime seasons, films (including the Progressive spinoff films), manga adaptations, and even a live-action series in development. The game represents another way fans can experience one of anime's most enduring properties.
