Bandai Namco Entertainment released a system trailer for Echoes of Aincrad, the upcoming action RPG based on Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online franchise. The video previews character abilities, combat partners, and weapon systems that players will encounter in the game.

The game hits Japanese stores on July 9 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a Steam PC release following on July 10. Western players get all three platforms on the same July 10 date. Four editions are available: the Standard Edition, Deluxe Edition with expansion DLC and early access to "Death Game" mode (a permadeath experience normally locked behind completing the story), the Ultimate Edition bundling all Deluxe content plus a bonus anime special, digital soundtrack, and artbook, and the exclusive Aincrad Edition from Bandai Namco's store featuring physical merchandise like a beanie and wall scroll.

The bonus "Unanswered//butterfly" special anime included with higher editions focuses on supporting characters during the original SAO story. Singer Aimer performs the theme song "Live to Survive."

Echoes of Aincrad places players among the 10,000 trapped in Aincrad, the deadly virtual MMO from the original story. You'll explore alongside series regulars like Kirito and Asuna as you navigate this death game.

The game represents the latest expansion of the Sword Art Online universe that began as a web novel in 2001. The franchise has grown significantly since its print debut in 2009, spanning multiple anime seasons, films, manga adaptations, and the recent Sword Art Online: Progressive anime films. The original story concluded with the 18th volume in 2016, but Kawahara continued the saga with new arcs including "Moon Cradle" and "Unital Ring," with the series now at 28 volumes and counting.

For longtime fans and newcomers alike, Echoes of Aincrad offers a chance to experience Aincrad from the ground level as one of the trapped players rather than through the anime's narrative lens.
