Sega dropped a surprise character reveal for Virtua Fighter Crossroads at Evo this weekend: a mysterious masked fighter named Bakunawa Killer. While the character's real identity stays under wraps, the trailer shows them incorporating combat techniques from franchise veterans Lau Chan and Lei Fei.

Virtua Fighter Crossroads marks a major departure from the series' traditional fighting game roots. Instead of a traditional competitive fighter, Sega and Ryu ga Gotoku Studio are building a narrative-driven action-adventure where players experience the story through four different protagonists, each with their own motivations and baggage. The game's central theme revolves around "crossroads"—how player choices in and out of combat forge alliances, determine consequences, and ultimately shape each character's destiny.

The project has assembled some serious creative talent. David Hayter, known for his work on X-Men and Watchmen, serves as world-building supervisor, while Brad Kayne (Ghost of Tsushima) leads the writing team. Scenario writers include Tsuyoshi Furuta from the Like A Dragon series and Shinji Yamamoto, who worked on Persona 5.

This isn't Sega's first attempt at revitalizing Virtua Fighter. The company teased the project in December 2024 and showed off combat gameplay last August. Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. launched on Steam in January 2025 with rollback netcode and visual upgrades, giving longtime fans a modernized version of the 2006 arcade classic while they wait for Crossroads.

The original Virtua Fighter arrived in arcades in 1993 and became legendary for its three-button control system and pioneering 3D polygon graphics. Though the main series hasn't seen a new entry since 2006, the franchise remains culturally significant—it even received a TV anime adaptation back in 1995, now streaming on Tubi.
