Wit Studio officially announced LONA (Laboratory of Optics and Neural Analysis), an original television anime helmed by director Takashi Katagiri, with a spring 2027 debut date.

Set in a fractured future, LONA follows researcher Ao and her apprentice Sango as they work for a specialized government organization tasked with investigating a chilling phenomenon: humans returning from the dead. The pair analyze the neural patterns of deceased subjects, searching for answers hidden in memories and consciousness itself. The series explores what people think about and leave behind in their final moments—clues encoded in the brain's deepest circuits.

The creative team represents a mix of established talent and fresh voices. Akiko Nogi, who wrote the screenplay for the INU-OH anime film and Library Wars, crafted the original story and screenplay. Character designer Posuka Demizu, known for creating The Promised Neverland, designed the cast, while Yūdai Iino (The Devil Is a Part-Timer!! seasons 2 and 3) handles animation character drawing.

The voice cast includes Minako Kotobuki as Ao, Anna Nagase as Sango, and Fūka Izumi as Mugen. The production boasts a comprehensive staff, including art director Yumiko Kuga, CG director Shigenori Hirozumi, and composer Hiroko Sébu.

Wit Studio first teased the project during the Chayamachi Oshi Festival 2026 on June 20, before releasing multiple teaser videos and visuals alongside the full announcement. A countdown website has also launched, giving fans a way to track the approach toward spring 2027.

LONA marks another original production for Wit Studio, which has built a reputation for distinctive storytelling across both adaptations and self-created projects. With Katagiri directing a mystery-thriller premise and a skilled ensemble behind the scenes, the anime appears positioned to offer something different from typical genre fare.
