ufotable announced the main voice cast for its upcoming anime film adaptation of Type-Moon's Witch on the Holy Night visual novel on Saturday. The studio confirmed that three key performers are returning to their roles:

  • Haruka Tomatsu as Aoko Aozaki
  • Kana Hanazawa as Alice Kuonji
  • Yūsuke Kobayashi as Sōjūrō Shizuki

The film is scheduled to release sometime this year.

Witch on the Holy Night tells the story of Aoko Aozaki, a reluctant heir to a prestigious magical family in the late 1980s. Despite her disinterest in the arcane arts, she's forced into an apprenticeship under Alice Kuonji, a mysterious young witch living in an isolated manor. As Aoko juggles her magical training with her duties as her school's student council president, she encounters a transfer student named Sōjūrō who holds strange secrets. Meanwhile, her older sister Tōko plots to reclaim what she believes is rightfully hers.

The visual novel itself has a storied history. Created by writer Kinoko Nasu and artist Takashi Takeuchi in the mid-90s as a personal project, it was initially only shared among friends before Type-Moon developed it into a full visual novel in 2012. The game eventually found a wider audience when Aniplex released PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions in the West in December 2022, selling over 150,000 copies worldwide. Type-Moon more recently ported the game to Steam in December 2023.

Witch on the Holy Night holds special significance within the broader Type-Moon universe—often called the "Nasuverse" by English-speaking fans. The story serves as one of the few direct narrative bridges connecting otherwise loosely related works like Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and The Garden of Sinners. Older versions of both Aoko and Tōko appear as important characters in those other franchises, grounding Witch on the Holy Night within Type-Moon's expansive shared cosmology.

With the main cast confirmed and a 2026 release window locked in, fans of Type-Moon's works now have another reason to anticipate what ufotable will bring to this long-dormant story.
