A new manga with a quirky historical twist just hit Shonen Jump+ this week. Kogattuo and Ichika Kino launched World Wide Web MIKO! (Sekai wo Tsunagi Tsukusu Internet Miko), and MANGA Plus is already publishing English chapters as they release in Japan.

The story takes an imaginative leap by setting the internet in the Meiji era of 1890. A young girl named Kanako is obsessed with the "Worldwide MIKO SpiriNet"—essentially the internet, which can only be controlled by chosen miko shrine maidens. Between browsing message boards and admiring pictures of men, Kanako gets wrapped up in this otherworldly internet that shouldn't exist.

This manga adaptation is based on light novels by Mochiko Mochida and Mizuki Sakakibara. Mochida first posted the series on Shōsetsuka ni Narō, a popular web novel platform, back in June 2016. Shufu to Seikatsu Sha began publishing the novels in physical volumes starting June 2017, with illustrations by Sakakibara.

Ichika Kino is familiar territory for English-speaking fans. Kino previously created Ossan Idol!, a manga that ran on Comic PASH! from 2018 to 2022 across eight volumes. Tokyopop released the series in English, so there's already an established English fanbase for this creator.

With World Wide Web MIKO! now serializing on Shonen Jump+, the manga has access to one of Japan's largest audiences for serialized content. The fact that MANGA Plus is publishing chapters simultaneously in English means Western fans won't have to wait long between Japanese and English releases—a huge advantage for staying caught up with the story.

The concept of blending historical Japanese settings with internet culture and miko mythology is an interesting hook. For fans who enjoy comedy, supernatural elements, and the kind of absurdist humor that comes from anachronistic premises, this could be worth checking out on MANGA Plus.
