Cyborg 009: Nemesis, a new anime adaptation of Shōtarō Ishinomori's classic manga, has officially cast Yūki Kaji in the lead role of Joe Shimamura. This marks the first returning character announcement for the series, which reimagines the long-running franchise with a fresh take.

The supporting cast for the Nemesis antagonist group has already been revealed through weekly announcements over the past two months. The villain roster includes Yūichi Nakamura as Graviton, Ayane Sakura as Deps, Maaya Uchida as Morphone, Shion Wakayama as Blitz, and Tetsu Inada as Aspida, alongside Kikuko Inoue, Hiroshi Kamiya, Yoshimasa Hosoya, and Rina Hidaka in additional roles.

Directed by Hideki Ambo at animation studio Arect, the series features screenplay work from Atsuhiro Tomioka (known for Pokémon) and CHARATEX, with character designs by sanorin. The theme song "Taga Tame ni" (For Whom) is performed by Kyōko from the rock band Barbee Boys—notably, this song originally played during the 1979 Cyborg 009 television series, with lyrics penned by Ishinomori himself.

The original Cyborg 009 manga launched in 1964 and has spawned multiple anime adaptations, films, and spin-offs across six decades. The story centers on Black Ghost, a global organization attempting to weaponize nine captured individuals as cyborg soldiers. The cyborgs eventually rebel against their creators and fight to stop the organization's plans for global domination.

Cyborg 009: Nemesis will stream this summer, though specific platform details and exact release dates haven't been announced. This new adaptation arrives nearly a decade after the Cyborg 009 Call of Justice films and represents a significant return for the franchise to anime television.
