Bassist Satoru Kaneto Celebrates 60th Birthday with Star-Studded Live Series
GRAPEVINE's longtime bassist Satoru Kaneto is marking his 60th birthday with a special summer concert series in Tokyo, featuring performances alongside The Groovers and The Birthday. The events showcase deep connections within Japan's rock community.

Bassist Satoru Kaneto is celebrating his 60th birthday in style this August with the "Kanayan 60th Anniversary Summer Fight Series," a two-part live event that brings together some of Japan's most respected rock acts.
Kaneto, who has supported GRAPEVINE for 25 years, will be honored with shows at two Tokyo venues. The first takes place August 14 at Shibuya Club Quattro, where GRAPEVINE will perform alongside The Groovers. The second event on August 25 at Liquidroom pairs GRAPEVINE with The Birthday.
The celebration speaks to Kaneto's influence across generations of musicians. GRAPEVINE vocalist and guitarist Kazumasuke Tanaka expressed deep gratitude in his remarks: "I think GRAPEVINE has been able to remain a band because of you. Congratulations again. With utmost respect."
Comments from both bands reveal the affection and musical impact Kaneto has had on his peers. Kazuhiko Fujii of The Groovers praised his "solid and groovy" bass playing, while members of The Birthday reflected on decades of friendship—both on and off stage. Kenji Fujii recalled how Kaneto taught him about travel, books, and music, and mentioned that Kaneto still uses a bread plate Kenji gave him 30 years ago from a trip to Canada's Canadian World.
Kaneto's own comments to both bands demonstrate the network of mutual respect that has defined Tokyo's rock scene. He described The Groovers as a "pinnacle trio band since the 90s" that inspired his own work, while calling The Birthday a band whose members he's followed as a musician and friend for decades.
Eplus is currently running a presale lottery for tickets through June 21. For fans of Japan's rock scene, these shows offer a rare opportunity to witness the deep camaraderie between musicians who've shaped the country's music landscape.
